The 1st reason why it
is worth supporting
Wu-Chi in its drive to solve the problem
of wayward male youth . . .
|
Because Wu-Chi is a school that makes
character development attractive to most
male youth in western society, and
especially to the more aggressive and
potentially violent male youth. |
Young men have a natural love for
martial art because it meets their
criteria of being fast, exciting and
challenging. As a result we find them
knocking on our doors eager to take part
in the classes. This makes them
attentive and very receptive to learning
physical and mental disciplines and,
most importantly, the moral lessons. |
|
| |
In the case of the more aggressive and
potentially violent male youth (as with
everyone) there is a strong desire to be
associated with things they identify with. But,
unfortunately the activities and organisations
that are attractive to such youth are usually
anti-social or criminal in nature, while the
organisations that help young people to become
responsible citizens are usually chosen only by
those kids who normally do not turn out to be
wayward. However, in the case of Wu-Chi, the
more potential a young person has to be violent
the more they are drawn to its classes.
|
| |
|
NB. The attitude of these youth towards
instruction when they join Wu-Chi is totally
opposite to that of young offenders who are
offered, as part of their punishment, the choice
to participate in a personal development
activity/program.
In such instances young offenders usually choose
to participate in such activities/programs,
because they see them as a:
|
- |
|
preferred option to
jail; |
|
- |
|
"cruisy-number" in a
probationary program; |
|
- |
|
chance to take a free
trip into the great outdoors as an
alternative to having to join a
community service detail that cleans
public toilets and mows lawns, etc. |
Hence, we find that when young offenders are
sent or
coerced by the authorities to
enroll in a personal development activity
program, it is very difficult to inspire them to
become truly interested in their own personal
development to any real extent. To some it might
appear that, by choosing such courses above
doing community service, they are learning to
choose better things for themselves and their
future, but usually this is not so, because
their attraction is misplaced, as it is founded
upon getting a way out of something they hate,
rather than getting into something they need.
Also, in most cases, when they are
'sent' to a personal development
activity program, we have observed that the
majority of them simply go through the motions,
enjoying themselves, happy that they don't have
to "do their time". And, although after a
great deal of effort and expense the respect of
a few might be gained, for most it is little
more than a free adventure with forced social
interaction.
Therefore, we would prefer that young offenders
are not sent
to Wu-Chi. We would rather mobilise our
marketing and advertising campaigns to attract
these youth to join our School of their own
freewill, before they offend — attracting them
fresh off the streets into an activity that they
choose, aside from the
prompting of any state authority.
This puts us (in their eyes) in a position where
we can demand high standards; a position which
we take advantage of to effectively teach them
high levels of ethical conduct.
One of the reasons why we stand head and
shoulders above most organisations, which are
designed to help wayward youth, is that right
from day one all our students are receptive and
sincere. |
